I really feel for Scotland’s precious fishing industry as it is experiences a 60% drop in demand during the Coronavirus pandemic. If this new initiative from Seafood Scotland takes effect, it could ease the hiatus in the supply chain and keep the industry and related business and community networks survive. It might also herald a complete turnaround in domestic consumption of fresh, locally-caught fish and seafood - traditionally much lower in Scotland than it is in European countries, where historically the majority of our seafood has been exported.
I’m taking the unusual step (for me) of publishing this release in full issued on behalf of Seafood Scotland because I think it is a bold and positive challenge. Will supermarkets now re-open their fish counters? Morrisons has - now it’s up to the others.
